A Successful Honoring Our Heroes Inaugural 5K! April 14, 2025

Rain couldn’t dampen the mood in East Meadow’s Eisenhower Park on Saturday, April 12th as more than 100 enthusiastic participants braved the elements to run or walk in our inaugural Honoring our Heroes 5K race and kids’ 1-mile fun run!

While Building Homes for Heroes is a national nonprofit that hosts events and home ceremonies all across the country, this race was a way to embrace our local roots and celebrate in the place where our charity first launched.

Smiling faces and patriotic apparel could be seen throughout the event. The race was organized by Building Homes for Heroes’ own Daniel Hernandez, a Marine Corps veteran and an avid runner, who wanted to unite people locally behind our mission. It was truly a local affair as participants and veterans from throughout Long Island helped make the day a success: students from Elmont’s Dutch Broadway Elementary School sang the National Anthem; volunteers from Sewanhaka High School and NYIT volunteered and helped cheer on the runners; TV personality and Long Island native Chris Hahn served as emcee; and Long Island Congresswoman Laura Gillan was also on hand to show her support.

Thank you to all those who attended and we hope to see you next year!
