The spirit of Christmas was in full force Northlake, Texas on Dec. 20th, as Building Homes for Heroes joined with Hillwood Communities, led by Ross Perot Jr., and D.R. Horton to celebrate a moment that felt straight out of a holiday movie. With flags waving and neighbors lining the streets, U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Michael Smith and his family were welcomed home in spectacular fashion as they received the keys to a brand new, mortgage free home. It was the fourth home gifted in December alone by Building Homes for Heroes, and a joyful way to honor a hero whose service spanned nearly 24 years.

The ceremony unfolded as a true community celebration. Hundreds gathered as a breathtaking flyover soared low above the home, drawing cheers from the crowd. The excitement peaked when parachute jumpers descended from the sky, personally delivering the keys to Sergeant First Class Smith. Joined by partners, supporters, and friends from Lowe’s and Amazon, it was truly an unforgettable moment.

Michael’s story is defined by his resilience and his determination. After enlisting in 1998, he served multiple overseas tours before a devastating vehicle accident in 2011 resulted in the loss of his right arm above the elbow. Facing medical retirement, Michael chose to fight to remain on active duty, ultimately becoming the first above-the-elbow amputee to return to active service in the U.S. Army. Along his road to recovery, he discovered endurance sports, competing at elite levels in Ironman races, triathlon, and Paralympic pursuits, all while advocating for inclusion and diversity through sport.

On this December day, joy filled the air, a hero was honored, and a family stepped into a new chapter, home for the holidays and for life.
