A Season of Giving, A Home for a Hero December 11, 2025
It was a crisp, sunny morning in Jeffersonton, Virginia, and one that USMC Staff Sergeant Karen Helms will remember for the rest of her life.
Just in time for Christmas, Karen and her two sons became the proud owners of a mortgage-free home. The gift, presented by Building Homes for Heroes in partnership with Lennar, stands as a heartfelt thank you for Karen’s remarkable service and sacrifice.
Staff Sergeant Helms dedicated 16 years to the United States Marine Corps. As an administrative chief, interpreter, and translator, she played a vital role in coordinating missions and tracking her fellow service members to help ensure their safety. Her proximity to C-130 aircraft during her service led to significant hearing loss in both ears, requiring her to rely on hearing aids. She also sustained injuries to her back, elbow, and the right side of her body, and continues to face PTSD, migraines, and other chronic injuries.
The Helms family’s new home was beautifully built by Lennar to meet their needs, offering comfort, stability, and a fresh start. Karen and her sons were all smiles as they received the keys to their new home, a sanctuary of hope, security, and the foundation for the next chapter of their lives.
For now, that chapter begins with celebrating the holiday season.
